At Thetus we take our bagels seriously, and apparently so does the rest of Portland! Since the loss of Kettleman’s Bagel Company a debate has continued over the best replacement bagel shop within the city. We decided to take it upon ourselves to quiet everyone’s concerns and get to the bottom of this bagel dispute and why not use our own analysis software to determine the best bagel shop in the city!

The Thetus analysis team selected five categories as key indicators of bagel perfection, rating factors like sweet or salty on a scale of 1 to 5. The office was then polled and the results were tallied, the five key indicators of an ideal bagel chosen were chewy, sweet, dense, large, and shiny. Next we performed a company-wide blind taste test comparison of nine Portland bagel shops, ranking the bagels on a scale of 1 to 5 in each of the five categories of perfection as well as overall experience.

The results were analyzed using a suite of tools offered in Savanna, the model-based analysis software solution developed by Thetus Corporation. See our Bagelmania infographic with the final bagel data. Based on overall experience, Rescue Bagels was rated number one. But when the overall experience score was compared to the score each bagel received in the five categories, the bagel that scored the closest to what Thetus associates with a “perfect” bagel was Marsee Baking. Disagree with our findings? Which bagel shop do you prefer?

Big Data – A Resource in Analysis and Decision-making

Yesterday morning the Technology Association of Oregon hosted a Technology Forum titled Big Data Now – but How to discuss the opportunities and challenges that come with this exponential growth of data, and mainly how do we use this data effectively? Three speakers from the top local analytics companies helped lead the discussion, one being Thetus’ Data, Analysis and Training team lead, Dan Vizzini. Below is a summary of Dan’s presentation on the perspective that Big Data is merely a resource in the service of good analysis and decision-making.

Focusing on big data is akin to the perspective of a sculler rowing upstream

Focusing on big data is akin to the perspective of a sculler rowing upstream

The arc of human development is fundamentally a reflection of the human capacity to gather, store, analyze and act upon information. Transformational leaps in society, economy, culture and science coincide with revolutionary changes in communications and information technologies. While computers and related technologies have radically expanded the human capacity for processing information (and has begun to replace humans entirely in some decision-making), the most important decisions in the life of human societies and enterprises remain in the hands of human beings. The pace of technologies, processes and regulations that drive the creation of big data is outdistancing the development of technologies, processes and practices required to extract understanding and insights in support of effective decision-making. The past is not necessarily prologue in a world beset with wickedly complex problems. Focusing on big data is akin to the perspective of a sculler rowing upstream.

Effective analysis looks beyond the bounds of known and knowable data; extending the reach of discovery, understanding and anticipation to unmapped domains of economic, social and ecological risk and opportunity.

Thetus software is built for this unmapped landscape of risk, opportunity and resilience. Thetus’ core product, Savanna, is a suite of analysis tools that encourage the formulation of knowledge models and tested hypotheses; enable the fusing of structured and unstructured data; and facilitate visualizations and fully-sourced productions for decision-makers.

Thetus provides solutions to organizations with complex and wicked problems, problems devoid of obvious pathways to solutions and subject to dynamic forces that require adaptable and resilient management strategies. Such problems require the kind of modeling, analysis and synthesis that only a well-trained and disciplined human being can perform. Our job is to facilitate that human intervention. Thetus begins with the problem, and considers big data as one type of resource in the hands of a competent team of analysts.

In the final analysis, Thetus answers the question of how to make the most of big data by asking… to what end? Our software facilitates the analysis to help our clients navigate their way to a desired reality by means of model-enabled and adaptive policies and practices. For Thetus, big data is an important resource to help human beings solve complex, wicked problems.

Below is information on the two other presenters.

Nitin Mayande, Co-founder and Chief Scientist of Tellagence – Tellagence is used to organize and analyze public and private data to empower businesses to improve the decision they make in marketing, operations, and investments.

Eimar Boesjes, Chief Operations Officer and Chief Technology Officer at Moonshadow Mobile – Moonshadow Mobile works with large databases, from tens of thousands to hundreds of millions of records to visualize “big data” over maps.

Savanna Feature Highlight : Productions

We’ve been busy adding new features and capabilities to Savanna, to help keep you up to speed we’ll be posting highlights that provide more information about these key features.

Savanna’s Production Feature:

Analysis is ineffective if it is not shared with the right people at the right time. Successful information sharing ensures that all participants in the analysis cycle have access to the information they need when they need it. Savanna addresses the importance of information sharing with template-driven, drag-and-drop customized reports.

With Savanna’s Production feature you can gather images and information (text, interactive maps, charts and more) related to your analysis for presentation and collaboration. You can create custom annotations to contextualize your analysis and add layers of information to your presentations with all original sources tracked. Production allows you to build, modify, and share compelling custom reports for your analysis.

Executive Breakfast Panel on Thetus Savanna, the analysis environment to meet your mission needs

Agencies are dealing with dynamic analytical challenges – missions like counter-narcotics, counterterrorism, homeland security, and mitigation of biological/chemical/nuclear threats requiring fast analysis that can drive the best possible decisions. Too many systems are narrowly focused on searching for data, resulting in sparse, inconsistent, and incomplete analytic output. Analytic systems need to better fuse, visualize, and make sense of the information for the user to interpret the best COA.

Savanna software helps solve modeling and analysis challenges your agency is facing. With Savanna existing repositories are overlaid to help you make sense of the information, without the need to re-index or re-store the data.

Celebrating our Tenth Anniversary with the Portland Community

The Thetus team in Portland in 2012

The Thetus team in Portland in 2012

We turned ten years old this year and boy have we aged gracefully.  In recognition of our tenth anniversary we have kicked off a yearlong program of sustainability-related events.  In keeping with the spirit of environmental, social, and economic sustainability, three tenets that are critical to the way Thetus does business, we will support a variety of activities that pay tribute to our customers, the local community, employees, partners and investors.

As a part of this program, we plan to enhance our employee volunteerism by supporting charities that are in the neighborhood where our headquarters resides, as well as in the greater Portland area.  We will also focus on fostering a strong future for the Portland technology industry by sponsoring local tech events, and continuing to minimize our environmental footprint by participating in activities that increase awareness about the impact that business can have on the environment.  And of course, no tenth anniversary would be complete without a celebration!

Ten years in business is certainly something to acknowledge, and it is in no small part due to an exceptional combination of Portland software industry partners, customers, employees, and the local community that Thetus has been able to reach this notable milestone.  We are thrilled to expand our role in the community that has been crucial to fostering our growth.

We will report on our monthly activities through this blog so stay tuned!

For starters, in January we put together a hefty donation to the local Oregon Food Bank.

Thetus Past and Present

Our new office in Washington D.C.

Our new office in Washington D.C.

It’s always helpful to see where you’ve come in the past year and set your goals for next year, below is a quick summary of 2012 at Thetus and an introduction into what is in the works for 2013.

A look back on 2012:

Thetus has taken on a new coast, we extended to the east coast in the fall when we opened up a new office in Washington D.C.  We’ve been growing like crazy and adding to our team, hints the bicoastal offices, not only did we open an office in D.C. but our headquarters in Portland, OR is moving into some new digs too! With a larger team we’ve been able to make more advances in our product Savanna and in April of 2012 we released Savanna 3.0. We’ve also been able to make a bigger impact in our communities; hosting large user groups, lending our space for our neighbors to use, and donating to families at our local military bases who are experiencing financial difficulty.

What’s to come in 2013:

This year marks our tenth year in business, a milestone we’re quite proud of. Currently we’re finalizing some plans for marking this corporate achievement, stay tuned. In early 2013 we’ll be releasing Savanna 3.3  followed by Savanna 4.0 later in the year, a major upgrade with all sorts of exciting functionality. This year we will be debuting new partnerships with other product companies to enhance our platform and other service companies to customize our solution options. We’ll post news on this blog so make sure to check back!

Thetus goes up to Mt.Hood

Heading up to the lodge at Collins Lake Resort

Heading up to the lodge at Collins Lake Resort

Last week we had our Thetus offsite and this time we headed up to Mt. Hood, a perfect location for this time of year. The main objective for our offsite was cross-team communication and process, since we’ve been growing quite rapidly throughout the year it was ideal to bring everyone together in an environment outside of the office. Having a day and half in a big lodge with all of us was just what we needed to refocus and streamline collaboration throughout our increasing staff.

As always, we split into teams with representatives from each of the departments within the office and we played around with some activities to get the creative juices flowing. One activity was to create a new module for our product, some examples of what groups came up with are below.

FutureEx – an analytic module to help you determine who you’re compatible with and therefore who you’ll be breaking up with next.

Chicken Picker – a tool to showcase the background or resume of a chicken (taking the Portlandia episode even farther).

Doom Busters – a pro-pocalypse tool to help you determine how you need to best prepare for the ultimate apocalypse.

Once again this offsite was an enjoyable and productive experience. Having an offsite is a great method for us to separate from our usual teams and create a company-wide discussion, an especially important task now that we’ve nearly doubled since our last offsite! We came up with some new and exciting ideas and everyone is on track to hit the ground running for another exciting year.

We want to give a special thanks to the Collins Lake Resort where we enjoyed the beautiful chalets they offer, thank you for all your hospitality, the wonderful food and the amazing scenery!

Take a look at our Offsite photo album on our Facebook page.

A New Face for Thetus.com

We just launched our newly redesigned website. Our last site design was very creative and out-of-the-box but we found the navigation was confusing for some users and the information about our product was buried. The new thetus.com has a more structured, familiar navigation and site architecture and we’ve slimmed down the content so visitors can easily find the information they need about our product Savanna. Let us know what you think by commenting on this post, we’d love to hear your thoughts!

See Savanna at GEOINT 2012

We’ll be demonstrating the latest and greatest in Savanna, our analysis solution, at the GEOINT Symposium in Orlando, Florida next week.

GEOINT is the nation’s largest intelligence event of the year. The annual event is hosted by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation, and brings together the defense, intelligence and homeland security communities all in one place.
